Sunrider Skeptic Turned Success Story

When 33-year old Josh Jarrell’s wife, IBO Kendra Jarrell, first introduced their family to Sunrider, Josh easily replaced a diet soda habit with Calli® and Fortune Delight®, but was stubborn when it came to food. “I was resistant to NuPlus® and Quinary®. I didn’t want to change any part of my diet. My weaknesses were carne asada burritos, sweets, and just food in general—not a good thing for someone 75 lbs. overweight. As a person who can’t stand change, it was very hard to believe what others were telling me about SR. I didn’t want to change,” Josh said.

Marketers of Acai Berry Weight-Loss Pills and ‘Colon Cleansers’ Ordered to Stop Deceptive Advertising

A recent article appearing on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) website reports how a U.S. district court “has ordered the marketers of acai berry supplements, ‘colon cleansers,’ and other products to temporarily halt an Internet sales scheme that allegedly scammed consumers out of $30 million or more in 2009 alone through deceptive advertising and unfair billing practices.”

The Better Business Bureau named phony “free” trial offers—including those for acai supplements—as one of the “Top 10 Scams and Rip Offs of 2009.” David Vladeck, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, estimates that “about a million people have fallen victim to this scam,” and adds that “there were fake endorsements from celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Rachael Ray for a product that didn’t work in the first place.”

The FTC charged various companies and two individuals with multiple violations, including “deceptively advertising AcaiPure, an acai berry supplement, as a weight-loss product, and Colopure, a colon cleansing supplement, as an aid for preventing cancer.”

Simple Steps for Summer Hydration

Business Plan Helps IBO “Get Back to Basics”

John Teng, North American Sales Manager, recently spoke to IBO Diane Haryett about the new business plan and how it’s helping her organization thrive: “The new business plan helps us get back to basics. It is easy to teach and for new people to understand and identify an achievable goal.” 


Diane said that when someone expresses interest in learning more about Sunrider, she asks them to think about adding income to their home, and to make a list of people who would be interested in the business or the products. She sets a clear “stair-step” goal to earn money in Sunrider: Build your personal group sales to $1,100, then $2,200, and then to $3,300 (approximate US currency to the Canada dollar,) and then ask four to five people to partner with you. 


She also believes it’s really smart to have the foods paid for. “The price of supermarket foods go up and down, but overall, the prices of all goods are only going to get higher so why not have your food paid for by Sunrider,” she said. Diane said that with the lower prices, it’s now the best time ever for consumers to buy the foods. She has a friend who recently bought a brand new car for the price the same make and model cost 10 years ago! That means the customer has the advantage and Diane encourages all of her consumers to “cash in while they can!” When they have extra cash from the reduced prices, she encourages them to buy more Sunrider® products.


When asked how she determines who is a consumer and who is a business builder, she is quick to say she was a skeptic at the beginning, too. If they say they are not interested in the business she tells them her own story, and that she once felt the same way. She tells them the day may come when they’ll be interested, so she asks for a few minutes to talk about the business for future reference. Diane also emphasizes the importance of addressing their needs and customizing your approach to those needs. Plus, “You never get bored working with these products…,” Diane said, “Sunrider products address overall wellness and there is something for everybody.”   


Diane’s right—there is something for everybody with Sunrider. Whether it’s business or product, Sunrider offers it all. Remember that when you approach people. Call Recap: Simple Plan Draws New Life to Organizations

To be sure you gleaned everything needed from last night’s call (please note: call will be replayed this Saturday, 8/14, at 10 am PST), we wanted to provide you with a helpful recap—one that hits all the high notes and emphasizes exactly what you need to know. Regardless of your Sunrider level, there’s someone on this panel to connect with and use for inspiration in your own business.


Please read closely and see what you can do to emulate their success—they’re really making it happen! 


First was Christine Marek, a Business Leader experiencing success in Phoenix, Arizona. Just a consumer up until February of this year, it took her only three months to become a Business Leader with the new plan and lower prices. She now has 70 people in her organization.


“ I’ve been in sales, I graduated with a marketing degree over 20 years ago…and I’ve always found that no matter what product or service I’ve [sold], I’ve had to love it. And by being a consumer first and having a great upline that taught me the benefits of the products, then I could tell anybody and everybody. In fact, you know, it wasn’t right for me not to tell people about the products. So that made me into a person that believes in my products and is honored to represent Sunrider…I want to grow more and more, so I have some great goals—some realistic, step by step goals—and I’m definitely going to see an improvement in my business.”


Then we listened to Linda Pinkerton, of Guadalupita, New Mexico, who has only been in Sunrider two years, originally giving Sunrider® products a “100 day try.” Not too long ago, Linda spoke to John Teng and told him at 72 she just wasn’t at the right stage in life to be a business builder, yet her organization has averaged $12,000 for the last three months!*


“What I’ve enjoyed about Sunrider is sharing what it’s done for me with other people, and I guess that’s the reason why I’ve been so successful…I really didn’t want to get into it to do a business, but I can’t help it. I have to share it and it has been so successful for me, because I have shared it with people.”


Carla Thompson, a nine year Sunrider veteran from Reading, Pennsylvania, recently changed her approach to business first (versus product) and is enjoying a flurry of activity and excitement in her organization with the new plan and prices.


“I decided to change my approach because of the easy compensation plan. I decided to take this new philosophy of business to business people and they readily comprehend that with this minimal start-up fee and no conflict with their existing business, they can see the income just climb rapidly. The compensation plan shows the business growth with just introducing two IBOs per month, and they kind of look at me in disbelief when they see what kind of income potential they can achieve and they immediately start talking to other business people about becoming IBOs… My phone’s been ringing off the hook and I’ve been running to try to keep up with this flurry of activity. Let’s focus on the carrots. Let’s look for what Dr. and Mrs. Chen are willing to pay us for. And so, as I see it, the plan is all geared for greater volume, and the plan is helping us to focus on sponsoring people …We have an attitude of service, and our focus is to get this wonderful product into as many hands as possible. I’m thrilled and so are my Business Leaders… there’s never been a finer time to get involved with Sunrider.”


Twenty-year Sunrider, J.W. Emerson of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, a Golden Group Business Leader, underscored that with the value of Sunrider’s unparalleled products, reorders make the business grow.


“It’s just the fact that the foods are now more affordable. That’s made a tremendous difference. But we teach and share with people the value of the foods…it’s re-orders that makes a difference in a company. “We’ve all had to adjust to our current situation, and some have had harder situations to adjust to than others, but the reality is, that when it’s all said and done, we have to adjust …to really see the value of what we have in the future…We’ve got to apply business principles and treat it like a business, so that we can be profitable…If you’re focusing on getting to, say, the $3,000 so that you can be a Business Leader, and then you plateau out and you’ve gotten there, you’ve missed the whole point, because as Business Leader, there’s no profit at that level… so if you hit the $3,000 and you kick back in your recliner, drink hot Calli®, and watch T.V. while you bask in your success, you’ve missed the point…I really do believe that with the pricing structure and the compensation plan, and the tools that we have, that it is easier to build now…There’s no reason why we can’t go out and hold our heads high and talk about the business end of it, and bring people in and let them experience the products and the potential growth that we have here.”

Cruising the Caribbean with Sunrider ABOs

Sunrider’s Authorized Business Owners enjoyed a 7-day cruise around the Caribbean for their 2010 Grand Convention, July 18–25. Over 400 ABOs set sail from Port Canaveral in Florida on the Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas. They enjoyed three island excursions to Coco Cay in the Bahamas, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten. ABOs soaked up the sun on beautiful beaches, went kayaking and snorkeling, and shopped for duty-free goods.
 
The workshops and meetings held on board the ship informed and inspired ABOs. Drs. Chen 
and top Business Leaders shared many powerful messages about Sunrider® products and the business plan during the general sessions, leadership meetings, and retail sales meeting. Dr. Chen’s passion and Mrs. Chen’s practical advice provided the motivation and know-how each ABO needed to succeed. 


During Julie McLewee and Mrs. Chen’s fun Kandesn® Workshops, ABOs sampled exciting new color cosmetics and learned the importance of hiring makeup artists to do simple, yet transformative makeovers. The second generation of Sunrider (Reuben and Katie Chen and John and Wendy Teng) was also very involved in speaking during nearly every meeting and providing behind-the-scenes support throughout the cruise.

At the end of the cruise, ABOs returned to Southern California to tour Sunrider’s World Headquarters and Los Angeles Manufacturing Plants. Each year, Sunrider’s Grand Convention is an unforgettable experience for everyone who attends.

Sunrider Singapore Manufacturing Earns AVA Silver Award for a Decade of Food Safety Excellence

Sunrider Singapore Manufacturing, Inc. was presented with two prestigious industry awards at the AVA Food Safety Excellence Awards Night, held July 23, 2010, at the Orchard Hotel in Singapore. This annual event, put on by the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) of Singapore, serves to recognize food manufacturing companies for maintaining the highest standards in food safety.

During a special ceremony, Sunrider Singapore Manufacturing, Inc. received an AVA Silver Award for achieving Grade “A” status for excellence in food hygiene, sanitation, and processing for ten consecutive years, 2000–2009.  A Certificate of Commendation was also awarded for achieving Grade “A” status during the two-year period of 2008–2009.

The awards were presented to Sunrider by Guest of Honor, Dr. Mohamad Maliki Osman, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of National Development, who was joined onstage by Mr. Koh Soo Keong, Board Chairman, AVA, and Ms. Tan Poh Hong, Chief Executive Officer, AVA.

Earning AVA Grade “A” License status is based on criteria such as factory cleanliness, factory housekeeping, food hygiene, employee personal hygiene, staff training, and performance record of the factory.

Receiving these awards adds further distinction to the proud record of Sunrider Singapore Manufacturing, Inc., which has invested heavily in its S$27-million (about US$18.8 million) facility. It boasts state-of-the-art equipment, including the biggest spray dry tower in Asia. Recognition from AVA is testimony to Sunrider's uncompromising commitment to manufacturing the best brand-name products under the highest standards of excellence.

Before joining Sunrider, I weighed more than 70 kg (154 lbs)! I had no confidence in myself and hated the very sight of bathroom scales. It was a sad and unhappy period in my life. Dr. Chen honored in Forbes Asia as one of the 25 most notable Chinese-Americans

Dr. Tei-Fu Chen, founder and chairman of the board of Sunrider International, has been selected by Forbes Asia magazine (August 2010) as one of the “25 most notable Chinese-Americans.” By earning this distinction, Dr. Chen takes his place on an illustrious list of “entrepreneurs, innovators, and businesspeople who left home and made their mark in the U.S.”

The methodology used to determine the list was based on a survey of prominent bankers, investors, business associations, scholars, and entrepreneurs. Other criteria considered were leadership within the industry and community, as well as “scale of economic success, such as wealth and jobs created.” To qualify, an honoree had to be born in Mainland China, Taiwan, or Hong Kong, and to have citizenship in the U.S. (second-generation not included).

This accolade was preceded by Dr. Chen also being listed in Forbes Asia magazine (March 2009) as one of the world’s “48 Heroes of Philanthropy.” A special report in this issue recognized Dr. Chen’s global philanthropic achievements that span over a decade.
