Dr. Chen honored in Forbes Asia as one of the 25 most notable Chinese-Americans

Dr. Tei-Fu Chen, founder and chairman of the board of Sunrider International, has been selected by Forbes Asia magazine (August 2010) as one of the “25 most notable Chinese-Americans.” By earning this distinction, Dr. Chen takes his place on an illustrious list of “entrepreneurs, innovators, and businesspeople who left home and made their mark in the U.S.”

The methodology used to determine the list was based on a survey of prominent bankers, investors, business associations, scholars, and entrepreneurs. Other criteria considered were leadership within the industry and community, as well as “scale of economic success, such as wealth and jobs created.” To qualify, an honoree had to be born in Mainland China, Taiwan, or Hong Kong, and to have citizenship in the U.S. (second-generation not included).

This accolade was preceded by Dr. Chen also being listed in Forbes Asia magazine (March 2009) as one of the world’s “48 Heroes of Philanthropy.” A special report in this issue recognized Dr. Chen’s global philanthropic achievements that span over a decade.

Dignitaries from Thailand Visit Sunrider World Headquarters

Sunrider recently received a special visit from several distinguished officials from Thailand. On Monday, October 19, the Consul General of Thailand in Los Angeles, the Honorable Damrong Kraikruan, visited the world headquarters of Sunrider International in Torrance, California. Consul General Kraikruan was accompanied by Ms. Nipa Nirannoot, Consul for Political and Economic Affairs, and Ms. Ploy Umpornpet, of the Thai Business Information Center.

During their visit to Sunrider's offices they enjoyed a VIP tour of the Chen Art Gallery, followed by an introductory presentation to some of Sunrider's most popular products. The Consul General also paid a visit to the executive office to discuss the business climate in Thailand and the progress of Sunrider's operations in the Thai market with Drs. Tei-Fu and Oi-Lin Chen.

Sunrider established its first office in Thailand in 1989, moving to its current office in Bangkok in 2004.

Hello, Utah! Drs. Chen Special Meeting Greets Salt Lake City

Drs. Chen touched down in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Friday, May 31, to lead a Special Meeting for area Sunriders and share our unique and special brand.

I asked Business Leader Richard Jensen of Spanish Fork, Utah, to share his thoughts, and here’s what he had to say:

“Drs. Chen gave an excellent presentation about the Sunrider® products and the opportunity we have as IBOs to share them with others. Dr. Chen explained the difference between Sunrider® products and regular brand products. We are fortunate in Sunrider to have owner expertise with professional methods of production, and ingredients we can trust in each of the products. Some of the products that were at the Product Fair, for our sampling, included: Sunrider’s fluoride-free SunSmile® Herbal Toothpaste, Kandesn® cosmetics, SunSmile® Fruit & Vegetable Rinse, smoothies with VitaShake®, and Fortune Delight®. It was great to taste and feel the quality of these products. The product demonstrations are simple to adopt into our own Sunrider business to make sharing easier. Sunrider a company nonpareil. Others may try to emulate, but without the brains and brawn behind Sunrider, it’s just not an option.

Kandesn® Room Reopens at Sunrider Headquarters


Greetings Dear Sunriders,

My name is Julie McLewee, and I am the new Marketing Manager for Kandesn®, Sunrider’s fantastic skin care and cosmetics line.

Okay, I admit it. I’m not really new! Many of you will remember that I was the Kandesn® Advisor for many years. I’m so excited to be back at Sunrider International! After moving away, I’m finally back home to where my adventure began in 1993.

Since I’ve been away, I’ve gained a lot of additional experience in marketing and training, particularly with skin care and cosmetics. And I am really looking forward to putting myself to work to support all of you in your sales efforts!

What I am most excited about are the phenomenal new products that are available at Sunrider now. Some of them that I have fallen in love with are many of the special treatment products such as:


I have only been using them for a few weeks, but already my skin has gotten back its former unmistakable Kandesn glow!

Now, for the really exciting news: We’re happy to announce that we will be reopening the

As I write to you, we are working on converting the room back into a beautiful training facility, and while I don’t have all the logistics on our opening day, rest assured it’s just around the corner. “Before Sunrider, I did research and development for another herbal company. I saw how most companies manufactured their lipsticks with animal byproducts and petroleum byproducts and oils. A New Year Message from Dr. Chen

2008 has been a year of great change and many challenges for the world. Currently, we are facing a severe economic crisis. After many years, though, I have learned that great challenges often bestow great blessings and opportunities. For example, in 1997 when the China government suddenly banned MLMs, I thought this was the end of Sunrider in China. I thought this was the worst thing that could ever happen to our business. It was a huge challenge, but we changed to a new franchise-like business with retail stores. Looking back, I see that what I thought was the worst thing was now the best thing for our business. Changing to the store system stabilized and legitimized our business in China.

I know that being complacent or doing nothing will cause our business to fail with the current economy. However, I also see the economic crisis as an incredible opportunity. More than ever, people need our business and the income it provides. To maximize this new opportunity and ensure the longevity of our business, my wife and I have decided to make changes to our IBO marketing plan. And in some countries, we will implement a new ABO store marketing plan, similar to our successful plan in China. We made these changes after months of meetings and discussions with Business Leaders and other IBOs. We listened to your feedback and incorporated many of your suggestions.

I know it will take adjustment; I know some of you may not like it. However, I believe this is the best plan for our business and essential to our continued success. Our new ABO and IBO plan does the following:

  • Helps ABOs open stores for brand awareness, legitimacy, and growth. Gives IBOs the choice to open stores or do direct selling.
  • Rewards the people who are working and increasing sales volume. Since we pay out from the company sales volume, the people who are working also help increase your income.
  • Clearly separates business builders from customers.
  • Helps you earn more retail profits from product sales.
  • Gives incentive to long-time Business Leaders to increase their sales volume.
  • Encourages people to find new customers and trainers rather than relying on roll-up.
Sunrider is a business, not a free handout or retirement plan. As a business, we have to keep working, growing, and improving. These changes are for your success. None of these changes mean that more money is going into my pocket, instead of yours. My wife and I feel the immense responsibility to help you succeed and work day and night to fulfill that responsibility.

Price Announcement
Normally, due to increased business costs, we announce a small price increase at the beginning of the calendar year. In 2008, we have experienced soaring costs in raw herbs and materials. However, given the economic pressures that you are all facing, we have decided not to increase prices in January 2009. We will absorb the cost increases and postpone the price increase until summer 2009. We hope that instead of worrying about prices, you will promote the business and products.

Post-Convention Update

I hope all of you had a great time at the Convention! I had a wonderful time meeting many of you, holding the young IBO workshop, and chasing my daughter around the Hall during the general sessions. Here’s a quick status update on the products and marketing tools. I know you are all dying to get them!

New Products

Of course everyone wants to know when you can buy the new products. I don’t deal directly with this issue, but I do know that it’s a rather complex process. It first depends on how well it sold in your country during convention, and the sales volume and recruiting rate in your country. We can’t launch new products if there are only a few people there to buy them. We also have to register the product and comply with local regulations. I know that’s not the answer you want because you want the products now. Hopefully, you bought enough products at Convention. But, I have better news. The new Oi-Lin® and some of the new product packaging should be phasing in soon over the next few months.

New Marketing Tools/Website

I oversee the writing, editing, look and feel of the marketing tool, but I don’t handle the printing or translating so I’m just estimating the time on these “hot” tools we are working on.

Sunrider® Training CD-ROM – we’ve made some revisions and most countries should be in production soon and have it in the next 3 months or sooner.

Ingredients Brochures – Dr. Chen told me to add more ingredients to the brochures so we are doing that. Some countries may not have this brochure due to government regulations. Estimated time is 1-2 months.

Website – It should be ready in 3-4 months.

We have many other tools in development like a new product catalog, new brochure on being environmentally friendly, and new product flyers. There’s lots of exciting changes and we hope you enjoy them.

Hawaii Regional Meeting

The Hawaii Regional Meeting held in Honolulu on December 27, 2007 was very special for me in so many ways. First of all, this trip was part of a prescheduled family Christmas vacation in Hawaii so I got to mix business with pleasure on this one. I have to admit that I always feel a little bit guilty taking up the invitations of our Independent Business Owners to go tour local attractions or do any sightseeing when I visit their beautiful cities during regional meetings. I guess I feel like I get to have all this fun while my wife Wendy is at home wrestling with our kids. Anyways, on this particular trip I could whole-heartedly enjoy the whole package since my family was there, too!

Secondly, my Brother-in-Law Reuben and his wife Katie also made the trip to Hawaii and they treated me to an introductory scuba diving experience for my Christmas present. I braved the merciless power of the Pacific Ocean to a depth of 41 feet and swam right next to sea turtles and eels. Sorry no photos to show since my so called “waterproof” camera immediately filled up with water once I jumped in the water.

Next, the Hawaii meeting date also marked my 4-year wedding anniversary and I am happy to report that I was fully prepared to give Wendy a big surprise during the evening meeting. I hired a guitar player to accompany me as I serenaded Wendy to the music of the Hawaiian Wedding Song. We then danced one more verse of the same song during the intermission between the opportunity meeting and the training meeting. I then handed her a beautiful anniversary ring that I brought with me from the mainland. It was a true-to-form day in the life of the Sunrider family—business and pleasure all mixed together into one big fun event!

And last but not least the actual Hawaii meeting! The evening represented a reunion of the Chen family with our beloved Sunrider friends in Hawaii. With the greatly appreciated help of our dear Sunrider friends, the Sugai family, a beautiful hotel venue was prepared to receive loyal Sunriders and guests at the big event. I was given the chance to share an opportunity meeting overview for all of the new guests. Dr. Chen, founder of Sunrider International, then shared a very powerful training message of how to effectively combine the power of the products with the earning potential of the compensation plan into one solid message that was so easy to understand and duplicate!

Although each trip to Hawaii always seems so short, I am really excited to go back again this February with all of our Sunrider leaders to enjoy the food, entertainment, and training awaiting those who qualified for the North American Leadership Conference. See you in Hawaii my friends!
