Sunrider Hosts Prestigious BYU Management Society Luncheon

Nearly 60 people attended a luncheon for the Los Angeles chapter of the BYU Management Society at Sunrider World Headquarters yesterday.

Attendees dined on delectable sandwiches and salads before listening to guest speaker Steven Wheelwright, President of Brigham Young University Hawaii. Asked to speak about moral leadership, President Wheelwright focused much of his discussion on trust and its importance in moral behavior and accountability. At the conclusion of the luncheon, Sunny Beutler presented President Wheelwright with an antique, Chinese four-horse chariot.

President Wheelwright is an MBA and doctorate degree recipient from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and has spent much of his career as a professor and administrator at the Harvard Business School. He also served as a Mission President for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in London.

According to its website, the society was founded in 1977 and “includes not only BYU and Marriott School alumni, but many other business professionals with the same desire for professional advancement, high ethical standards, career development, and continuing education…the management society is an influential organization with about 6,000 members in 40 U.S. cities and 10 countries.”

Sunrider was proud to host the luncheon for a great group of people—a group which shares many of Sunrider’s business ideals, such as integrity and strong ethics.

Mary Rodriquez is August’s Employee of the Month!

Mary joined Sunrider over two years ago, and is an Order Rep II in our Order Department. Her positive attitude, strong work ethic, and dedication to Sunrider each day make Mary a superb choice as our latest EOM. Mary often receives praise from IBOs for her great customer service skills, and going above and beyond to assist them. Mary eagerly accepts any project she is assigned to, and takes great pride and ownership in her work and accomplishments.

Most recently, Mary has been assisting IBOs in our Pick-Up Center.
Mary’s an excellent role model for the Order Department, and a great representative for Sunrider!

Mary answered the usual “get-to-know-you” questions, so we could learn more about her!

Q1: What is the best thing about being a SR employee?
I would say the best thing about being employed at SR is that while working here I have gotten the chance to work with several different people—people who I have gotten the chance to build strong bonds with over the past two years. We’re more like a family here at SR.

Q2: What’s your best memory of SR?
Out of so many memories I have here at Sunrider, I would have to say meeting the Yin to my Yang. The holiday parties are very memorable, too, simply because I get the chance to socialize and just have some fun.

Q3: What do you like most about your job?
What I like most about my job is that I get to interact with people from around the globe during Convention.

Q4: What’s your favorite color?
My favorite color would have to be the color of my mini Lexus—black.

Q5: Do you have any pets?
No pets for me.

Congratulations, Mary, and thanks for your hard work!

New Shaker Bottles Coming Today!

Starting today at 5 pm PDT, Sunrider will release newly designed 32 oz. Shaker Bottles made without bisphenol A. Commonly referred to as BPA, bisphenol A is used primarily to make plastics. It is a key monomer in the most common form of polycarbonate plastic, which is clear and nearly shatter-proof, and used to make a variety of common products including baby and water bottles, sports equipment, medical and dental devices, and so on.

After reports surfaced in 2008 questioning the safety of the use of bisphenol A in consumer products, some retailers removed products containing it from their shelves, and some manufacturers began making products without the ingredient. However, the FDA has not banned this substance nor declared that it is harmful.

Please keep in mind that our current Shaker Bottles are completely safe, and we will continue to sell the 16 oz. size as before, as well as the new 32 oz. bottles without BPA.

The Power of Women in the Global Economy (and Sunrider, too!)

Sunrider is planning to start a special new teleconference series dedicated specifically to topics of interest to women.

They say that behind every good man is a great woman, and in the case of our economy, that seems to be true as well. In “The Female Economy,” a recent Harvard Business Review article, authors Michael J. Silverstein and Kate Sayre write, “Women now drive the world economy,” and “represent a growth market bigger than China and India combined – more than twice as big, in fact.”

But there’s a disconnect between this massive market opportunity and the commodities currently offered to women. With a market share that large (China + India x2), one would think women ruled the marketplace roost, but that’s not the case. Companies the world over fall well short of providing the appropriate goods and services to this mega-consumer category. Women are still “undervalued in the marketplace” with “few companies responding to their need for time-saving solutions or for products and services designed specifically for them.”

It’s clear that women are a powerful, driving component in the economy, warranting more attention in the marketplace! That’s why Sunrider International wants to build a new series of teleconference calls dedicated to women’s interests.

But first, we want your ideas! Tell us what topics we should discuss on these calls, and leave your thoughts and suggestions here in the comment section of this blog post or on any of our social media sites (Facebook, Twitter).

We look forward to receiving your valuable input!

Product Fair and Opportunity Meeting in Soho

As some of you know, England is one of my favorite places in the world. I was an English major and studied Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon for a summer during college. I love the language (since I already speak it), the rich culture, and I'm learning to like the food.

On Thursday, September 10, I visited Sunrider's new office in Soho for the very first time. They just had their grand opening in March, and the dust has finally settled down (mostly there's still some construction on the 4th and 5th floors). I was impressed with the historic brick building in this trendy business district. Our office is located right next to Paul McCartney's office and Bloomsbury's offices (the publishers of Harry Potter). I hear Paul McCartney sometimes walks by, but I haven't seen him...yet.

The European IBOs are very proud of their new office and visit often. They have beautiful display cases, a lovely entrance, and a flat screen TV playing Sunrider's Company Profile presentation. They will be adding a seating area and another display case. It's an excellent location, with people walking in just to see what Sunrider is about.

On Friday, I helped prepare for the Product Fair and meeting so there would be no glitches. Then on Saturday afternoon, the fun began! At 3pm, we started with the Product Fair. About 50 IBOs from the United Kingdom, Hungary, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Germany participated in this fun event. I met several brand-new IBOs and new customers. I showed a new IBO how to do a skin care product demonstration, which she loved. I then introduced her to the immediate effects of Dr. Chen® Refining & Lifting Cream and Oi-Lin® Replenish Gel. She applied them to her eye area in preparation for a date she had later that evening. We also had stations for color cosmetics (probably the busiest area!), Fortune Delight®, VitaShake®, SunSmile® Fruit & Vegetable Rinse, and SunSmile® Herbal Toothpaste. Everyone did a great job explaining the product quality and value.

After the Product Fair, we held an Opportunity Meeting. I started the meeting by showing the 8-minute video presentation from the Grand Convention (it will be on the training website). It set the tone for the meeting, establishing my parents' integrity and passion, and explained the Philosophy of Regeneration™. We used the Opportunity Meeting on the website with an IBO covering each section. I was impressed with the good people that we have in Sunrider. They are caring people who really want to help others, not just make a quick buck. Plus, they all have lovely accents!

I also had the privilege of announcing the location of the 2010 Leadership/Convention event for Europe and North America: a 12-day Mediterranean cruise to Italy, Greece, Turkey, and Egypt! I'm so excited about this. My father, the consummate world traveler, personally requested Cairo, Egypt since the Great Pyramids are the one place he has always wanted to visit. I also gave a short presentation on the upcoming marketing and Web tools. (Side note: We have so many projects that are so close to completion! I can't wait for everyone to see them. Look for a new SR Newsletter, a new product catalog, a new Shop Online, and a new Replicator site in the next 3 months!) This was also a good opportunity for me to get excellent feedback. It felt like a great partnership.

No Sunrider event would be complete without lots and lots of food. After the meeting, 9 Hungarian IBOs, some of the Europe staff, and I went to Chinatown for a gut-busting Chinese dinner. Chinatown is within walking distance to the office (maybe that's a reason my parents chose the location?). Soho becomes a very different place at night. There were lots of people walking around, drinking outside the pubs and clubs. It has an active nightlife. We ended up at the same Chinese restaurant my parents went to for the office's grand opening. The food was delicious, and I practiced speaking Chinese. The waiter was from Malaysia, and he recognized Fortune Delight®. I think it was also the first time I ordered Chinese food for so large a group. I know if my dad had been there, we would have ended up with even MORE food!

I had a brilliant time, and I'm looking forward to seeing my new friends next year on the Mediterranean!

Wendy

Sunworld Dynasty™ Hotel Taipei Aids Typhoon Relief Efforts

Dr. Tei-Fu Chen, in addition to being the founder and chairman of the board of Sunrider International, is also the owner of three hotels in Asia, including the Sunworld Dynasty™ Hotel Taipei in Taiwan. Although Dr. Chen no longer lives in Taiwan, his deeply rooted connection to the country of his birth (and formative years) was evidenced recently after Typhoon Morakot wreaked havoc in Taiwan. This cataclysmic disaster spurred Dr. Chen to swiftly galvanize relief efforts at his hotel and channel contributions to foundations set up to aid the victims.

Typhoon Morakot, one of the deadliest typhoons to impact Taiwan in recorded history, formed early on August 2, 2009 as an unnamed tropical depression. The large system gradually intensified and was upgraded to a typhoon. Early on August 7, the storm attained its peak intensity and hit central Taiwan later that day. Typhoon Morakot caused terrible damage, leaving hundreds dead and forcing over a million people to evacuate their homes. The typhoon’s path of destruction left countless people in need of food, shelter, and medical attention.

Dr. Chen responded to the calamity by encouraging his staff at the Sunworld Dynasty™ Hotel Taipei to contribute funds to the Disaster Relief Foundations of two prominent satellite cable news television channels in Taiwan: TVBS News and FTV News. The Dr. Chen-initiated fund drive took place from August 15 through September 15, 2009.

In addition to the staff contribution drive, Dr. Chen has mandated that the service fees from the hotel’s food and beverage department be donated to the relief fund. It is Dr. Chen’s hope that the collective charitable contributions from the employees and hotel service fees will provide some measure of support to the disaster victims as they try to rebuild their lives.

Bowers Museum Collectors’ Council Tours Chen Art Gallery, Visits Product Fair

Following a tour of the Chen Art Gallery, Bowers Museum Collectors’ Council members were welcomed to a special Product Fair created just for them.

Held in the Healthy Life Store, we demonstrated products from the Oi-Lin® Skin Care Set, Kandesn® Protective Foundation SPF 15, SunSmile® Herbal Toothpaste, and SunBreeze® Balm & Oil! After describing the power of our skin care and cosmetic products, Kandesn® Marketing Manager Julie McLewee had to run and get extra business cards to give to all those who wanted to schedule appointments in the Kandesn® Room!

Delicious VitaShake® Strawberry smoothie samples filled with strawberry and pineapple were doled out, and the amazing cleaning power of our SunSmile® Fruit & Vegetable Rinse was illustrated on waxy broccoli from the grocery store (it emerged gorgeously green!). We also provided FortuneDelight® Peach to sample, which was very well received! Numerous people asked how to purchase the products and mentioned how delicious the FortuneDelight® and VitaShake® smoothies were!

This was a wonderful step in spreading the word about Sunrider and a fabulous way to increase our exposure in the community.

A Navy SEAL Fitness Challenge Round-Up With John Teng

On Saturday, August 8, 2009, I competed in my second Navy SEAL Fitness Challenge which was located in Seattle, WA. You may recall that my first experience with this amazing competition took place in Phoenix, AZ on March 14, 2009. So here is a performance comparison of these last two competitions:

Event: 500 Yard Swim
Notes: Breast stroke/side stroke
March 14th: 10 minutes
August 8th: 9 minutes
Results: 10% Faster

Event:
Push-ups
Notes: Consecutive in 2 minutes
March 14th: 90
August 8th: 105
Results: 17% Stronger

Event: Sit-ups
Notes: Consecutive in 2 minutes
March 14th: 47
August 8th: 74
Results: 57% Stronger

Event: Pull-ups
Notes: Consecutive no time limit
March 14th: 12
August 8th: 15
Results: 25% Stronger

Event: 1.5 Mile Run
Notes: Terrain varies by event
March 14th: 11:03
August 8th: 12:22
Results: 12% Slower *

* Compared to the Phoenix event on March 14, 2009, I drastically improved in four out of the five events in Seattle, WA. My swim time, push-ups, and pull-ups met SEALs competitive standards, and my sit ups met minimum standards. While the Los Angeles event at UCLA in 2008 appears to have provided a true rubber track for the running event, the track in Phoenix was a flat grass field, and the track for Seattle was a pot-holed grass field with a loose gravel path and a wooded hill portion! Expressing my frustration to Wendy that I had to complete the run in Seattle on a loose gravel hill, Wendy reminded me that in a real mission situation, Navy SEALs probably rarely face working environments better than what they had anticipated, so they have to be conditioned and ready for any surprises. Essentially what she said was “suck it up” and start training on hills so that if they make you run on a desert sand dune next time, you will have enough endurance to attain competitive level marks in all five events and collect the famed blue shirt! Sounds good to me!
For those of you interested in participating and/or competing in events that require high strength and high endurance, here is my “minimum list” of Sunrider® products I would recommend you take/use every day:

VitaShake®
NuPlus®
SunBar®
Fortune Delight®
Calli® Herbal Tea
Dr. Chen™ MetaBooster®
Tei-Fu™ MetaShaper®
Sunrise®
Electrosport®
SunBreeze® Oil

Please refer to the recommendations on the product labels for information on how to best utilize the power of these amazing products, and stay tuned for more of my training regimen updates as I prepare for my next competition using the best foods on the planet made by Sunrider!

To all of my motivated Sunriders out there, let me leave you with a cherished quote I keep in my personal dreams and goals book as follows: “If you’re physically strong that makes you mentally strong. If you’re mentally strong you can do anything.” -David Goggins, Petty Officer First Class, Navy SEAL Navy Athlete; Ultra Runner

Sunrider's Alaska Cruise

Saturday night, July 25, marked the grand finale to an amazing week at the Sunrider Grand Convention that most, if not all, in attendance considered the best Grand Convention in 28 years! Retiring to our hotel after dancing and singing to a live Beatles cover band, my family hurried back to our hotel room to sleep for two hours and repack our luggage to tag along with Dr. and Mrs. Chen to the Authorized Business Owners Convention for ABOs from China, Taiwan, and Korea that was being held on a Celebrity Cruise ship, Mercury, from Sunday, July 26, to Sunday, August 1. Our first stop was at the small fishing
town of Sitka where everyone enjoyed a guided tour of the town, a Native American museum tour, and dance performance. The next stop was Juneau, the capital of Alaska. Wendy and I chartered a helicopter ride to a remote glacier for a dog sledding adventure and returned back in time to enjoy a catered baked salmon luncheon and a wonderful day of shopping in town. Ketchikan was our third stop where we got as close as possible to a glacier for pictures and another museum tour. The whole trip was intermingled with great food, comfortable accommodations for the onboard ABO meetings, breathtaking scenery, and even a view of a family of killer whales playing by the side of our ship!

In addition to all of the fun, I also spent a lot of time on board the ship sleeping and trying to recover from the rigors of planning and hosting Sunrider’s Grand Convention in Anaheim! Dr. and Mrs. Chen reminded me once again how hard they work for Sunrider. Drs. Chen didn’t get any more sleep than I did in preparation for this convention, and yet both of them stood on stage for hours during the Alaska cruise teaching and training the ABO leaders in attendance. I consider myself to be a very physically fit and hardworking person, but compared to the brutally long days that the Chens put in running and maintaining a worldwide family business, I feel like I am not doing nearly as much as I could to help them move Sunrider forward with greater success and momentum for the future. In my opinion, the best way for all of us to show our thanks to Drs. Chen for their superhuman commitment to improving the wellness and financial lifestyle for all of us and those to follow, is to commit ourselves to working a little bit harder and smarter to share “health and wealth” and Sunrider’s Philosophy of Regeneration™ to finally reach out to the 99.9% of the world that is still waiting to hear about us for the very first time! I am making that personal commitment, and I hope you all will, too.

Ernie Wang is Sunrider’s July Employee of the Month!

Ernie Wang is an auditor in Sunrider’s Internal Audit department and has been with the company for two years. Ernie performs company audits locally and around the world, and is often gone for weeks visiting far away affiliates! He meticulously sorts through records and procedures, and makes suggestions for improvements.

Ernie showed remarkable efforts in leading the Promo Sales area at headquarters during the recent Convention. Ernie didn’t stop until 1:00 am for three straight days the weekend before convention officially began, and the following Wednesday, he worked the entire night without sleep to close out in Torrance, and get ready to start in Anaheim the next day.
Ernie is a caring, sincere, and exceptional person—we are lucky to have him! Congratulations, Ernie, on your Employee of the Month achievement, and thank you for your amazing attitude and efforts during Convention!

I asked Ernie a few questions so we could get to know him better.

Q1: What is the best thing about being a SR employee?
A1: Sunrider is a great company to work for. I have a terrific boss who treats me with dignity, respect, and is always willing to coach me. The company offers competitive wages, excellent benefits, and provides a healthy work environment. My colleagues are helpful, collaborative, and friendly. I feel deep in my heart that Sunrider is simply the best!

Q2: What’s your best memory of SR?
A2: The most memorable one was when I got the support I needed most during the last Grand Convention, i.e., while I was severely short on “pickers” at the Product Sales operation. Janene, our Human Resources Director, provided the leadership and initiative to send additional staff in time to ensure Product Sales was a success. I was so moved that I truly could not thank her enough.

Q3: What do you like most about your job?
A3: The fundamental responsibility of my job is to assist members of Sunrider in the effective discharge of their responsibilities by testing internal controls over all areas of operations. In a nutshell, my job is to ensure that Sunrider businesses are run effectively and efficiently. However, technology is rapidly changing the nature of most internal auditors’ work. With this ever-evolving business world, internal auditors are facing challenges in replacing the “control activities” with an internal control structure consisting of five elements: control environment, risk assessment, control activities, communication and information, and monitoring. To confront these challenges head on and ascertain that the results of operations are consistent with established objectives is what I love most about my job.

Q4: What’s your favorite color?
A4: I love red, blue, and white. That was the very reason that some 30 years ago I came to this country, which I love so dearly. However, blue would be my most favorite color if I had to pick one of the three.

Q5: Do you have any pets?
A5: No, I do not for the time being. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to adopting a few lovely birds in the near future.

Ernie, congratulations on your achievement!

Fanatics for Fitness! Sunrider Networks at Bally’s Expo

Sunrider has plenty of products ideally suited to support a workout routine, so it’s no surprise we hosted a booth at a recent Bally’s Expo. We served Fortune Delight® and demonstrated several products, including SunSmile® Fruit & Vegetable Rinse, SunBreeze® Oil and Balm, and the Oi-Lin® Skin Care Set.

North American Sales Manager, John Teng, an avid gym-goer, connected with multiple people who want to build muscle and strength, and discussed how some of our products, such as the SunSport® Pack, can help achieve those goals…some fitness tips were swapped, too!

Julie McLewee, our Kandesn® Marketing Manager, told passersby about the Kandesn® cosmetic line and Oi-Lin® skin care line. Ladies stopped to learn about the uniqueness of our make-up and skin care products and even made appointments to visit the Kandesn® room next week!

IBOs Debbie Clydesdale, Juan Flores, and Mary and Tim Young helped man the booth and support our presence at the expo. Mary, Tim, and Debbie helped explain the benefits of our foods and supplements, while Juan Flores was able to connect with the large Hispanic community there getting fit and healthy! Many business cards changed hands and the Sunrider brand will be recognized more because of our attendance!
