Sunrider Salutes Memorial Day

This Monday, May 31, is Memorial Day (originally called Decoration Day), which represents a very special day of remembrance in the United States. Sunrider is proud to observe this federal holiday commemorating the United States men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country.

According to usmemorialday.org, “Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, and was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.” The holiday was then expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.

There are many ways people observe Memorial Day, a few of which are listed below.
In addition to remembrance, for many people, Memorial Day also signals the unofficial start of summer and is an occasion that brings a welcome three-day weekend. The day is commonly celebrated with activities such as picnics, parades, sporting events, and get-togethers with family and friends. If you’re doing any grilling, remember that Dr. Chen® Secret Sauce™ is the ultimate condiment.

Sunrider wishes everyone a safe, happy, and memorable Memorial Day.

Slimmer, Trimmer, and Happier: Sunrider Helps Achieve Results

Carol Wilhelm wasn’t obese—she didn’t need to lose a massive amount of weight and she wouldn’t have made an ideal contestant on The Biggest Loser. But she did need to lose 25 lbs.—pounds that snuck up on her slowly and were affecting her upbeat personality.

In 2007, while on a Sunrider trip to the Panama Canal, Carol was more spectator than participator, but it wasn’t until later she realized why. “While my caloric intake had remained the same as when I was a very active at-home mom with a part-time Sunrider business, my office job as homeschool teacher really decreased my active time…I was surprised at how gradually and unobservedly I had gained 25 lbs. since beginning that job,” she said.

While large amounts of weight loss are impressive and admirable, smaller amounts lost are often just as important and difficult to lose. (It’s often said the last remaining pounds are especially formidable.) Plus, Carol’s extra weight was largely concentrated in her belly area, a region studies show is most likely to increase chances of heart failure when carrying too much fat—especially in women.

When she later went to the doctor, the exam revealed a higher body fat ratio and other such measures that weren’t very healthy. “[The doctor] suggested medication. I suggested I go back to eating right, being more active, and get my self in gear! We compromised with six months on my plan, and if the numbers weren’t better, I would move to his plan. I knew my body would quickly respond to better nutrition and more activity.”

NuPlus®, Quinary®, Calli®, and Fortune Delight® became Carol’s mainstays, eating the Sunrider® foods before meals. She also increased her intake of Fortune Delight® and added Dr. Chen® MetaBooster® and Tei-Fu™ Metashaper™ to her daily routine, adding, “The best part is the fat around my tummy went away, but my body did not get flabby or stretched looking. It was just like ‘spot reducing.’ I love it!”

In six months, Carol’s plan worked and she lost the 25 lbs.* “The energy returned and I used it attending the gym with my daughter…I enjoy traveling, hiking, and playing with children and grandkids with greater energy than ever! I gave away my size 14 jeans and am now sliding loosely into my new size 8 jeans!” Last year, Carol got married and spent her honeymoon in Hawaii: “I have much more self-confidence and vibrant energy now, and my time on that trip was spent off the boat and plunging energetically into my new life! Thank you, Drs. Chen.”

Carol is an inspiring example of how losing weight, no matter the amount, can help you re-energize and revitalize your life. With the support of Sunrider’s revolutionary products, such as Fortune Delight®, MetaShaper™, and MetaBooster®, and the health benefits of an active lifestyle and healthy diet, Carol shed those harmful 25 lbs. and got her vitality back!*

*In conjunction with regular exercise and a healthy diet. Results not typical.

Employees of the Month

It’s time to catch everyone up on our great employees who recently earned our Employee of the Month award. Congratulations to all three, and thank you for your hard work and contributions to Sunrider!

Michelle Kong

Congratulations to Michelle, Sunrider’s February Employee of the Month. Michelle joined Sunrider two years ago, and is a Tax Accountant in our Tax Department. She is directly responsible for the preparation of the U.S. and state income tax returns for Sunrider’s numerous entities. She is a quick study who produces very detailed, high-quality work.

Michelle works independently and is an organized, dependable self-starter. She makes the extra effort to improve historical and carry-over tax files and schedules. She has a high level of responsibility with regard to complex income tax matters, and always displays an excellent attitude and commitment to her work and Sunrider. Clearly a very valuable member of our tax team, Michelle is always willing to help others and share her vast tax knowledge. The volume and quality of her work is superb!

Ashish Agarwal

Congratulations to Ashish, our March Employee of the Month. Ashish has been with Sunrider nearly 10 years, and is a Programmer/Analyst IV in our Information Technology Department. His main responsibilities are to develop and maintain the IBO Business Shop Online and convention websites, and the data exchange between the web and the HP system.

Ashish also helps his peers whenever the need arises. One notable example was during convention last summer. While on a break, Ashish saw long lines in promo sales, and stepped in on his own to help. After the lines thinned, he returned to his IT responsibilities and continued to work another long day! Ashish prioritizes his projects, and always finishes them before or within the deadline.

Best of all, Ashish has a great attitude and extreme patience. He can often be found working extra hours just to make sure the “job gets done!”

Aaron reviews and amends the legal writings of contracts and various other agreements in China and Taiwan. He’s a great researcher, and has gained valuable information from the Chinese legal system. "Anti-Supplement" Language Hidden in Reform Bill

Recently passed in the House of Representatives, the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2009 (H.R. 4173), includes language inserted by Congressman Henry Waxman (D-CA), which goes beyond the bill’s true goal, finance reform. According to the Alliance for Natural Health (ANH-USA), “this language could be used for an end run around the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), the legislation that governs dietary supplement regulation by the FDA.”

ANH-USA believes the language inserted by Congressman Waxman “gives the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) important new powers that could be used to circumvent key supplement protections in DSHEA [Dietary Supplement and Health Education Act of 1994]….We know that the FTC would like to use such powers to impose new and crippling requirements on supplement companies.”  Such “crippling requirements,” according to the ANH, include financially draining trials before making any product claims, which would essentially turn the supplement industry into the drug industry, and create damaging affects to companies such as Sunrider.

We urge you to read more on the subject, educate yourself, and then contact your senator to oppose the bill. To easily do this, please click here.

This bill could potentially be voted on as early as this weekend, so please act fast.

Buon Appetito!

On Friday, May 7, Sunrider International staff members dined on delicious Italian fare, thanks to our first floor and IT department employees. Why the big gesture you ask? Because it was time for another of Sunrider’s famous employee potluck lunches! Periodically, various departments host themed potlucks where employees gather for tasty grub, warm camaraderie, and a fun break from our usual daily lunches.

This potluck featured Italian cuisine, including two types of lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, chicken fettucine alfredo, chicken and capers, eggplant parmigiana, pizza, salad, bread, and several amazing desserts!

The “Classroom” (a separate area of the Sunny Café where special events are often held) was transformed into a cozy “ristorante Italiano” complete with red and white checked tablecloths, dim lighting, candles, and even a hostess’ stand! Plus, in honor of Mother’s Day, beautiful red roses were given to every mom in attendance, as well as a Kandesn® lip gloss or lipstick!

It was an incredibly savory meal enjoyed by all. Can’t wait until the next one for more scrumptious food and a relaxing lunch with fellow Sunrider coworkers!

Supporting Local Youth

The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce’s Junior Leadership Graduation Ceremony was once again held at Sunrider International on April 28, 2010, from 5:30 p.m–8:00 p.m. More than 100 parents attended, along with Torrance city and school officials, including the Torrance mayor, City Council members, the Torrance Unified School District superintendent, and school board members, to celebrate the graduation of two-dozen high school students from this educational program sponsored by Sunrider International.

The program consists of student participation in history, city, health & non-profit, and corporate days to learn more about their community. During this junior leadership program, students visited the Torrance Historical Society, City Hall, a hospital, various non-profits, and local businesses, including Sunrider International. The students received graduation certificates and recognition from city, county, state, and federal representatives.

Through this junior leadership program, and many other community programs, Sunrider supports our youth and encourages their leadership skills to grow and prosper.

We wish the best of luck to each and every participant as they take what they learned in the program and apply it to their lives!
