Michelle Castañeda—Sunrider International’s December 2009 Employee of the Month

Michelle, a Senior Paralegal in our Legal Department, graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in Political Science where she also obtained her paralegal certificate. Her positive attitude, good sense of humor, and great multitasking ability has made Michelle a vital Legal team member during her 10 years with Sunrider.

Michelle specializes in corporate law and is primarily involved in the formation, compliance, and maintenance of Sunrider’s ever growing number of domestic and international companies. With dozens of legal entities to service and monitor annually, her outstanding organizational skills, judgment, and expertise are invaluable in our multi-national business. She assisted in meeting important 2009 yearend deadlines and coordinated critical company formations and filings. Her involvement with recent corporate reorganizations, due diligence, legal research, transactional work, and coordination of projects with her co-workers and outside professionals was also note-worthy.

Michelle enjoys running with her husband Carlos, even completing the Los Angeles Marathon, and has two beautiful young girls, Giselle and Cayla.

Kudos on this career achievement!

Michelle revealed these tidbits about herself!

Q1: What is the best thing about being a SR employee? It most definitely has to be the friendships and relationships I’ve developed with my co-workers and our affiliate members in the different parts of the world we service.

Q2: What’s your best memory of SR? My best memories are the times when all of us in the Legal Dept. got creative and came up with these fun ideas for themed Halloween costumes. We would all dress up and participate in the SR Halloween contest. The most fun was working together as a team and coming up with some pretty great ideas. We would later celebrate by going out to lunch using our winnings. Those were good memories!

Q3: What do you like most about your job?
My job presents different challenges everyday in promoting good health and well being to all people around the world, so that they may have our Sunrider® products available to them.

Q4: What’s your favorite color? Black

Q5: Do you have any pets? A fish

Sunrider Shines at the Go Green Expo!

Sunrider’s booth at the Go Green Expo in Los Angeles on January 21 & 22 was a real hit. The “green” theme provided the perfect environment to showcase our philosophy and many of our most popular products. The booth was manned by several IBOs and Sunrider staff, most notably John Teng, Sunrider’s North American Sales Manager.

Everyone who visited the booth embraced Sunrider’s Philosophy of Regeneration™, and because they were like-minded people, they quickly grasped the concept of achieving Health and Beauty from the inside out and the outside in. John Teng drew a big crowd when he shared Sunrider’s whole foods and nutritional supplements with a group of bodybuilders and fitness instructors. He let them know that Sunrider’s Vitalite® and SunSport® lines are the healthiest choice to meet all their fitness goals, without the deleterious side effects and the artificial ingredients found in many of the popular supplements on the market.

There were also many attractive ladies of all ages and ethnicities who got excited at the opportunity to experience Kandesn® Color. They were impressed by the fact that Kandesn® foundations allow the skin to function optimally and that the color and the skin care are also based on the Philosophy of Regeneration™.
Kandesn® Marketing Manager Julie McLewee allowed them to experience the Oi-Lin® Skin Care Set. They were amazed at the effect they felt after just four simple steps, and it was just what many of the ladies had been looking for! They were delighted to know that its products contained stellar ingredients, including olive oil, avocado oil, and jojoba oil, just to name a few. Many of these savvy consumers asked if the ingredients contained animal proteins, mineral oil, or lanolin, and we were happy to tell them “absolutely not!” Those who experienced it on their faces said they could not believe how soft, hydrated, and radiant their skin looked. Finally, they loved that our lipsticks are “good enough to eat” and they were impressed that the whole Kandesn® line is researched, developed, and manufactured in our state-of-the-art facilities in Torrance.

Here’s what a few of our IBOs had to say about the event and Sunrider:

Phil Bartel, San Diego CA
I spoke with many positive, health-minded people who were very open to Sunrider’s products and philosophy. I obtained many new contacts. I’m sufficiently impressed with the Go Green Expo. I would look into participating in other cities around Southern Cal.

Serra Lynn Kelley, San Clemente CA
All the people I spoke with seem genuinely interested in safe health and beauty [products]. Everyone was on the same page and wanted more information about Sunrider and our high-quality products.

Mary & Tim Young, Gardena CA
I’ve attended many expos over the years and this has been the easiest event to engage people. Many of the people we spoke with have shown an interest in coming down to Sunrider Headquarters to attend a Product Fair or see more of the Kandesn® line in the Kandesn® Room!

Arizona Welcomes Kandesn® Meetings

Training Inspires IBOs to Switch, Share, & Showcase Kandesn®

Kandesn® Marketing Manager Julie McLewee recently traveled to Arizona for two Kandesn® packed meetings with Sunrider faithful and their guests.

At the meetings, Julie discussed
Sunrider’s skin care basics such as the Oi-Lin® Skin Care Set and provided education about Special Treatment products such as Dr. Chen® Brightening Serum, Dr. Chen® Refining & Lifting Cream, Oi-Lin® Exceptional Cream, and Oi-Lin® Eye Cream. She also provided a thorough overview of the Kandesn® cosmetics, emphasizing the quality of our ingredients and manufacturing. Basic skin care regimens, the Eye Treatments, and men’s skin care were demonstrated on models for attendees as well. Following the demonstration segments, tips to help local business leaders expand their Sunrider businesses were also discussed, including participating in local business mixers and expos.

Business Leader Chris Vicencio said, “Julie took each one of us one by one and helped us find and apply colors specifically for our
complexions—it was very special. For people new to our skin care, the most impressive thing for them was the Kandesn® Protective Foundation SPF 15 demo. It got them very excited about the products! The meeting also taught us how easy it is to have our own skin care meetings with our groups…In the future, I’ll be able to promote the skin care to more people, more efficiently, and help build my Sunrider business.”

Business Leader Betsey Ricciardi said, “The most beneficial part was advancing my knowledge of the Kandesn® products so that I feel confident in sharing their benefits with others. I enjoyed being with a synergistic team of Sunriders that were joy
ful and eager…it was enjoyable to observe the ‘ah- ha!’ moments that many of the participants experienced…I loved seeing the personal transformations of the attendees that Julie personally worked with. Indeed, Kandesn® color can create ‘beautiful magic.’ I learned that the value of Kandesn®, with its…superior botanical ingredients, surpasses all manufacturing standards and competition.”

Two successful meetings in Arizona left local Business Leaders and newcomers motivated to host their own skin care meetings, build their Sunrider businesses, and continue their Sunrider® product education.

Expanding the Sunrider Opportunity Down Under

January 12, 2010 marked the official opening of Sunrider’s first retail store in Australia. Drs. Tei-Fu and Oi-Lin Chen were welcomed to Westfield Southland in Cheltenham (suburb to the south of Melbourne) to officiate at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Flagship Store. Not only did the ceremony announce the store’s grand opening, but it put the Australian retail world on notice that Sunrider will continue to grow and develop, benefiting anyone who wants to be part of Sunrider’s life-transforming opportunity.

The mayor of the City of Kingston, Cr Steve Staikos, also participated in the ceremony, which included a lion dance performance and store blessing, followed by a Product Fair held in the store after the ceremony. Hundreds of people flocked to the new store to see what Sunrider was all about. It added up to a very enjoyable afternoon, as valued IBO visitors from Interstate shared their marvelous experiences with both established Sunriders and those just looking and wondering “What is Sunrider?”

In the evening, Drs. Chen hosted a special meeting at the Langham Hotel in Melbourne. Dr. Chen impressed the audience with his presentation and knowledge of the body, namely, how beauty and health can be enhanced by Sunrider’s Philosophy of Regeneration™. Mrs. Chen led the meeting as well, announcing the new marketing plan developed especially for Australia. These events, and the announcements about the new retail opportunity, herald a bright future for Sunrider in a new and exciting market place.

Liz Penaloza is Sunrider’s November 2009 Employee of the Month!

Congratulations to Liz Penaloza, our November ‘09 Employee of the Month. Liz has been with Sunrider over 10-years, and is a Financial Analyst II in our Corporate Finance Department. Liz always displays a positive attitude and great team spirit, and is a conscientious worker who is always willing to assist co-workers and peers.

Since recently converting to the Oracle Accounting System, Liz has taken extra time and effort to learn the new system and its reporting applications. Her hard work has paid off, as she is learning the system and is able to assist co-workers and peers in navigating and using its different applications.

Liz is always willing to take on new projects and responsibilities, as well as completing ad hoc requests with short notice and under strict time constraints. She is committed to Sunrider and has shown this through her hard work, positive attitude, and enthusiasm! She’s a pure joy to work with, always happy and pleasant, and loves helping in any situation.

Congratulations, Liz, and thank you for 10-years of service and loyalty to Sunrider!

Q1: What is the best thing about being a SR employee?
A1: Being part of Sunrider means being part of a global family. Over the years, I have developed friendships and working relationships which have enriched my life in some form.

Q2: What’s your best memory of SR?
A2: My first convention over 10-years ago was memorable. I was astounded by the number of IBOs who attended to better their lifestyles and those around them. I heard their Sunrider stories firsthand and their energetic motivation was incomparable to anything I had ever seen before.

Q3: What do you like most about your job?
A3: I truly enjoy working at Sunrider. I can’t really single out one particular thing about what I like the most because I love it that much! It has always been important to me to be happy where I work more than anything else. Being here this many years should say something about that.

Q4: What’s your favorite color?
A4: My favorite color is silver.

Q5: Do you have any pets? If so, what kind?
A5: I do have a dog. His name is Scooby. My daughter named him when she was two years old. At that age, all dogs were “Scooby” from the TV show.

The Six Be’s for Sunrider’s Social Media

Hi everyone!

Now that we have almost 2,000 Facebook fans, I wanted to post our “Six Be’s” for using social media.

At Sunrider, we enjoy interacting with our business owners and customers through social media. We also encourage you to post content, experiences, photos, etc. on our social media websites, your own sites, and other people’s sites. When you post, please adhere to these few guidelines:

  1. Be gracious. Create a positive atmosphere. Sometimes, people will disagree with you, but you should refrain from engaging in “flame” wars. If someone makes a negative comment about Sunrider, don’t keep arguing or responding because you won’t change his or her mind.
  2. Be smart. Think before you post. Posts, pictures, and comments are indexed by search engines and could “live forever.” You don’t want to write or post something that you later regret. Also, if you have a shipping problem or product issue, don’t post about it (which will also get picked up by search engines). Instead, call customer service.
  3. Be clean. Don’t use profanity or post anything vulgar.
  4. Be true. We want you to share your experiences and thoughts on Sunrider. Just make sure you represent yourself and your experiences truthfully. Don’t post content that’s false, gossipy, or misleading about yourself, the company, or someone else.
  5. Be friendly. Add links to Sunrider sites, but don’t try to push products or make sales pitches. Social media is about creating friendships and relationships first. If you wouldn’t say something in person to someone, then don’t post it online. Also, update your content frequently and respond to others—friendships can become stagnant without constant maintenance.
  6. Be careful. We are happy you love our products and they work for you. However, don’t make medical claims or prescribe products. It can lead to serious trouble. All of us must comply with longstanding government regulations regarding product claims.
Be sure to join me next week (January 27 at 5:00 pm PST) for my conference call on social media and the internet.

Wendy

Beef Bulgogi (Korean Barbeque) Recipe

A Sunrider from Korea shared this recipe with us, and it looked so good we wanted to share it with everyone! This dish offers a tantalizing blend of textures and flavors…plus it provides the “hands-on” fun of wrapping your own bite-size BBQ “sandwiches” in crispy lettuce and then popping them in your mouth. So bon appétit, or as they say in Korea, jal meokkesseumnida!

Serves about four

Ingredients:
  • 600g beef (recommend thin slices of sirloin)
  • ½ onion
  • ½ green pepper
  • 1/3 carrot
  • ½ head of lettuce
  • 1/8 pear
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
  • 1 teaspoon SunnyDew®
  • 1 tablespoon Dr. Chen® Secret Sauce™
  • 1g Fortune Delight®

Instructions:
  1. Dice onion, green pepper, pear, and carrot (after rinsing them with SunSmile® Fruit & Vegetable Rinse).
  2. Make a marinade in a bowl by mixing SunnyDew®, Dr. Chen® Secret Sauce™, soy sauce, chopped pear, garlic, sesame oil, and the sesame seeds. Marinate overnight.
  3. Put beef in a sauce pan and add vegetables and Fortune Delight®. Then add the marinade.
  4. Cook in a preheated pan for about 15 minutes at 100C. Sprinkle on Fortune Delight® to enhance aroma.
  5. Place small portions of beef on bite-size lettuce leaves.
  6. Serve and enjoy!

Aloha, Sunrider! Sold-out Meetings in Hawaii with the Chen Family

During the new year holiday, Independent Business Owners in Hawaii shared their aloha spirit with the Chen family (Drs. Tei-Fu and Oi-Lin Chen, Wendy and John Teng, Sunny and Jonathan Beutler, and Eric Chen). The Chen family met with Jonathan Sugai, a top IBO and second generation Sunrider, on December 28 to discuss the upcoming Sunrider events. On December 30, despite the busy holiday season, over 50 IBOs and customers attended the Product Fair, Dr. Chen Special Meeting, and Opportunity Meeting held at the Sugais' Sunrider® office and shiatsu clinic. The sold-out meetings were a huge success with guests overflowing into adjacent, standing-room only rooms. Sunny, Jonathan, and Eric participated in the Product Fair, sharing product samples and discussing products with IBOs and customers.

As emcee for the meetings, John Teng shared his love of Sunrider and introduced Dr. Chen. Dr. Chen then gave one of his best talks on the Philosophy of Regeneration™, emphasizing the youth-restoring and beauty-enhancing aspects of Sunrider® products. Dr. Chen also discussed the sixth "element" in his Philosophy of Regeneration™—the skin, and the importance of our Kandesn® skin-care products.

Mrs. Chen shared new product developments, such as the new SunBar® formulation and Apple Cinnamon NuPuffs®, and gave samples to the audience.

After the audience sampled these new products, Dr. Chen then gave a short presentation on the Sunrider opportunity. He explained that the combination of Sunrider's unique products and business plan makes our business so powerful. Wendy demonstrated new training tools on the website and encouraged IBOs to use social media to promote Sunrider. Finally, Sunny and John showed slides on the upcoming 12-day Leadership and Convention Cruise to the Mediterranean. The audience gasped at each slide showing the breathtaking cruise ship and locations to Egypt, Italy, Greece, and Turkey. It was an extremely motivating meeting, leaving IBOs eager to qualify for the cruise and customers eager to buy products.

Voted The Most Changed

SR Teen Chooses New Path, Better Health

Alex Eastburn was only eight years old when her parents began using Sunrider® products, but she wasn’t exactly thrilled with it. To be exact, Alex said she “hated it.” Her mother, Lorraine Eastburn, a Group Business Leader from Phoenix, Arizona, had also changed the family’s diet to “all natural and organic.”

Alex, like many children in today’s society, was used to lunches filled with sodas, sweets, and salty snacks—foods that contribute to weight gain and a plethora of other health ailments. But rather than face the shame of her healthy lunches, Alex continued eating poorly at school. “I was embarrassed because my lunches were so different from the other kids’. I continued to eat at school, and bought cookies, sodas, etc. when I could. I over ate, had no energy, slept a lot, and didn’t like to exercise,” Alex said. She was on track to become overweight and have poor health, a common situation for many children and teenagers in America.

At home, Alex ate Sunrider® products sparingly, and even though Lorraine made healthy meals for the family, Alex always wanted more helpings and craved junk food. It wasn’t until starting high school that Alex realized she wanted to change her appearance and boost her self-esteem. “I asked my mom to start making me VitaShake® every morning, lots of Fortune Delight®, Sunbars, and whole organic food. I also took Vitalite® Slim Caps™…Within two months I lost 15 lbs.* All of my food cravings went away. My whole life changed completely.”

Today, Alex is a happy and healthy 18-year old. She follows a strict regimen of healthy foods and Sunrider® products, including Calli®, Citric C™ Tab, Fortune Delight®, Quinary®, Spirulina, VitaShake®, Vitalite® Fibertone®, and Vitalite® Slim Caps™. Thanks to Sunrider® products, a very healthy diet, and exercise, Alex lost six inches in her waist, looks great, and feels better about herself.* Most of all, she’s changed her path and can make healthy choices even after she leaves home. “I feel so much more balanced and together than most of the teens I know. Now, I have more energy and a drive for success,” she said.

This year, as a graduating senior, Alex was voted “The Most Changed” with a before and after picture in the yearbook. And Alex’s friends actually come to her for suggestions about getting healthy. “I spent all of my high school years in the Sunrider lifestyle. Now,” she says, “I am proud of what’s in my lunch box.”

*In conjunction with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Results not typical.
