According to usmemorialday.org, “Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, and was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.” The holiday was then expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.
There are many ways people observe Memorial Day, a few of which are listed below.
- Visiting a war memorial.
- Participating in a Memorial Day celebration.
- Flying the American flag at half-mast until noon.
- Making a pledge to aid the families of fallen or disabled soldiers.
- Participating in the National Day of Remembrance by pausing at 3:00 pm to reflect upon the true meaning of the day.
In addition to remembrance, for many people, Memorial Day also signals the unofficial start of summer and is an occasion that brings a welcome three-day weekend. The day is commonly celebrated with activities such as picnics, parades, sporting events, and get-togethers with family and friends.
